Entry #1

This is my first senior project blog post! For those who don’t know what I am doing for my senior project I am creating a new academic concentration for students who are interested in the medical field. I’m super pumped for it because I know so many other students who are interested in the medical field but didn’t want to do the other concentrations available.

Anyways, the first half of my day was dedicated to drafting up my overview for the concentration and getting the required classes. Before I started typing up my draft, I took a look at the existing concentration’s overviews and based mine on those. Next up was choosing the required classes for the concentration. I already had a bit of a plan when it came to choosing the classes that would be required because there were some classes that were really obvious, like AP Bio and Anatomy and Physiology. Some were on the fence though, like Psychology and Sports Medicine, but I figured out that Psychology should be a recommended class and Sports Medicine should be required.

My first meeting with Amy went super well today. We discussed the work that I did in the morning and my plan for the next two weeks. We also talked about how Proctor offers a lot for environmental science, but not a ton of options for kids interested in health sciences. After the meeting I worked a little bit more on my competencies and other requirements.

I also had my first meeting with Heidi as well to discuss what I had so far for the concentration. She really liked the idea of having something separate from the STEM concentration that got kids into medicine. We talked over a bunch of stuff and brainstormed a couple of ideas for what I already had written down, like having Dartmouth-Hitchcock come to Proctor and present on different topics like mental health and sex education.

Hours done: 5

  1. I'm very interested to see how this turns out. Do you think we have enough current offerings to create the concentration?

    1. I believe we do have enough class offerings for this concentration. What’s good too is that the concentration also relies on the shadowing piece of the course and not just the classes.

  2. Very cool topic, Isabella. I am wondering what success might look like for you at the end of Project Period? Keep shining.
