Weekly Reflection #1
5/15/21
This week was definitely one for drafting up overviews and emails. Going into this week I knew that I had to start my drafts for the overview, class requirements and much more. I started out with the draft of the overview for the concentration. My mentor, Amy, has been super helpful and supportive with this whole project. Our first meeting we discussed how Proctor has so many environmental science opportunities and very few opportunities for students to study medicine. I then realized that I was going to need Heidi’s help in creating this concentration since she is the head of the program. I sent her both the overview draft and the checklist draft to discuss while we met. We talked for a while and came up with some more awesome ideas for the concentration, like making it a different section of STEM and holding once-a-trimester seminars available to students and the public (once COVID loosens up restrictions).
I also began to contact areas for shadow and volunteering opportunities. Kelly was really happy to take kids for shadowing, Chris complained a little bit about it but I got him to agree. I contacted Diane from Ragged Mountain Physical Therapy and she said that she could take students to shadow. I linked New London Hospital’s volunteering website to the contact sheet. Then, I contacted Dartmouth-Hitchcock Workforce Readiness Institute about having students shadow at Dartmouth and holding the once-a-trimester seminars. They were overjoyed to hear from me again and know that I am creating a new relationship for them to get students interested in the medical field.
I learned this week that creating a concentration is gonna be much more work than I originally thought. It will definitely be more than 55 hours. I really enjoyed what I was doing since it is something that I have wanted to make since coming to Proctor. Surprisingly enough, everything went according to plan, hopefully next week goes the same. I am definitely going to benefit from this week since I am creating stronger relationships with people at Proctor and at Dartmouth. Everything I did and plan to do will help my goals.
Total hours for the week: 21 hours and 45 mins
You are doing great work!!!
